The concerts and the practice of Kirtan, the ancient chanting of Sanskrit mantras in a “call-response“ format, will offer us a space where we will be able to silence the mind leading us to the innermost center of our Being from which can evoke the individual and collective song. You will be able to rest in the spaces that will be enabled for that purpose, visit our shopping area with stands offering different products (clothes, personal care, hygiene, therapy, etc.), eat healthy in the space reserverd for foodtracks and enjoy a juice or herbal tea at any time of the day.

Rodney Yee: el gimnasta que introdujo el yoga en la vida diaria de los estadounidenses

A principios de los 90, millones de estadounidenses empezaron a practicar yoga gracias a los videos formativos de Rodney Yee.

Todo empezó a finales de los 80. Rodney Yee, tras dejar atrás 8 años de dedicación profesional al ballet y otros tantos como gimnasta, decidió probar con el yoga para, de una vez por todas, aumentar su flexibilidad y estirar sus piernas. “Cuando era muy joven llegué a odiar mi cuerpo”, comenta Rodney Yee en una entrevista. Su decisión de abandonar su prometedora carrera de danza clásica no entusiasmó a sus padres: “me preguntaron si estaba loco”.

Pocos años después, en el 1992, Yee pasó a ser toda una estrella en el mundo del yoga en Estados Unidos: sus videos “Yoga Journal’s Yoga for Meditation”, filmados en el Parque Nacional de Yosemite, empezaron a distribuirse por todo el país y, en cuestión de meses, el yoga generó una fuerte demanda en Estados Unidos.

Durante la década de los 90 “la gente empezó a dejar de ver el yoga como una actividad extraña”, sostiene Kathryn Arnold, exdirectora de Yoga Journal, quien ha trabajado conjuntamente con Rodney Yee a lo largo de todos estos años.

Aprovechando el tirón, además de seguir grabando videos formativos de yoga (a día de hoy cuenta con más de medio centenar; su video Yoga For Begineers fue el más vendido de Amazon en el 2001 y su canal de Youtube ya alcanza varios millones de visualizaciones), Yee publicó en 2002 el libro “Yoga: The Poetry of the Body” que fue presentado, entre otros lugares, en el emblemático show televisivo de Oprah Winfrey.

La clave del éxito de Rodney Yee

Tras más de 40 años de experiencia en el yoga, a lo largo de todos estos años Yee ha desarrollado su propio estilo, influenciado por el Iyengar Yoga y su experiencia con el ballet. Pero quizás la clave del éxito ha sido saber introducir el yoga en las vidas de aquellas personas que más lo necesitaban. Es el caso del proyecto Urban Zen Foundation, creado en el 2007 junto a su mujer Colleen Saidman Yee y Donna Karan.

“Durante tantos años de tratamiento contra el cáncer de mi marido, me di cuenta de que nuestro sistema de salud se centra en la enfermedad del paciente”, comenta Donna Karan. “Creo que se debería tratar al paciente en sí, no únicamente a una parte de él, a la vez que también deberíamos cuidar de nuestros doctores/as y enfermeros/as debido a la presión a la que están sometidos”. De esta manera nació el programa “Urban Zen Integrative Therapy”, para dar respuesta a esta carencia del sistema de salud, integrando especialidades como el yoga, el reiki, la nutrición o ejercicios de meditación tanto para pacientes como para personal sanitario.   

El proyecto nació en Nueva York, pero tan solo dos años más tarde, se empezó a exportar a otras zonas de Estados Unidos como California, Ohio o Illinois contando ya con más de 20 centros. 

Todo un legado en el mundo del yoga

Además de participar en el proyecto UZF, Rodney Yee abrió su primer estudio de Yoga en Oakland en el 1996 y actualmente dirige dos estudios “Yoga Shanti” en New York junto a su actual esposa y, por si fuera poco, hace unos años se propuso acercar sus enseñanzas a cualquier punto del mundo a través del proyecto Gaiam: sesiones de yoga en streaming bajo demanda.

Además de todo esto, todavía les queda tiempo para viajar por todo el mundo impartiendo clases de yoga en los mejores estudios. En este caso, tanto Rodney como su esposa Colleen Saidman, estarán los días 19 y 20 de junio en YogaOne Sarrià impartiendo diferentes sesiones y acercando su sabiduría y experiencia a todos los asistentes. ¡Sin duda es una cita que no te deberías perder!
