Los ocho pasos del yoga

Cuando hablamos del Ashtanga Yoga, conviene aclarar que, por un lado, nos solemos referir al estilo o sistema de práctica de asanas difundido por el maestro Sri Pattabhi Jois. Sin embargo, en un plano más formal, el Ashtanga Yoga es la serie de ocho pasos o disciplinas incluida en los Yoga Sutras de Patanjali, el texto clásico que se considera la guía central de todas las escuelas de yoga.

Según esta obra, el seguimiento exhaustivo y constante de los ocho pasos del yoga permite al yogui aquietar las fluctuaciones de la mente, purificar el cuerpo y alcanzar finalmente la iluminación o el estado de yoga. De esta manera, el camino del yoga no se limita a las series de asanas ejercitadas sobre la esterilla, sino que el objetivo de todo practicante debe ser realizar una práctica integral que se traslada a diferentes aspectos de la vida. Sólo a través del perfeccionamiento de cada uno de los ocho pasos, se puede llegar finalmente a la liberación.

Así, los ocho pasos del Ashtanga Yoga son:

Yamas

Son códigos morales o conductas que nos permiten vivir en armonía con nosotros mismos y en sociedad.

Hay cinco:

  • Ahimsa: Renunciar a cualquier tipo de violencia.
  • Satya: Defender y decir la verdad.
  • Asteya: Ser honrado, no robar.
  • Brahmacharya: Controlar la energía y no desperdiciarla.
  • Aparigraha: Vivir con desapego.

Niyamas

Son códigos o conductas que purifican la relación que establecemos con nosotros mismos.

También son cinco:

  • Saucha: Limpiar el cuerpo, la mente y la palabra.
  • Santosha: Gozar de la vida. Disfrutarla en todos sus aspectos.
  • Tapas: Vivir con austeridad y disciplina.
  • Svadyaya: Cultivar el autoconocimiento.
  • Ishvara Pranidhana: Practicar la devoción, el servicio a la divinidad.

Asana

Es la parte física de la práctica del yoga, en la que ejercitamos el cuerpo y a través de la respiración concentramos la mente mediante series de posturas buscando equilibrio, estabilidad, fuerza, elasticidad y facilidad o comodidad.

Pranayama

Es el conjunto de prácticas relacionadas con el control y la expansión de la energía vital o prana. Se trabaja a través de la respiración con varios métodos de diversa dificultad e intensidad. Se suelen realizar ejercicios relajantes, estimulantes o estabilizadores.

Pratyahara

Es la práctica del yoga mental a través del control de los sentidos, que se consigue mediante diversos ejercicios. Consiste en neutralizar los inputs que provienen de los sentidos, desconectarnos de la información externa y centrar toda nuestra atención en lo que sucede en nuestro interior, tanto a nivel físico como mental. Las secuencias de asanas se practican con esta intención a lo largo de toda la sesión, para que nuestra mente se mantenga en el aquí y en el ahora.

Dharana

La concentración. Cuando llevamos la atención hacia el interior, suele ocurrir que descubrimos la cantidad de molestias físicas o pensamientos que cruzan nuestra mente sin descanso. Para empezar a detener esa fluctuación, utilizamos diferentes técnicas de concentración, intentando acostumbrarnos y aprender a llevar toda nuestra concentración hacia un punto determinado. Se suele trabajar fijando la mente en un objeto invariable, como una vela, una flor, un mantra o un mandala, para evitar que se disperse.

Dhyana

La meditación. Cuando conseguimos mantener el flujo de atención sin distracciones durante el tiempo suficiente entramos en estado de meditación, en el que la mente se mantiene inmóvil. Implica desarrollar nuestra consciencia testigo y convertirnos en observadores de nosotros mismos, de nuestra mente, en todo momento.

Samadhi

Es el estado definitivo de realización o de conciencia suprema al que se llega a través de un estado de meditación profunda, en el que se trasciende el cuerpo físico. Definitivamente nos fundimos en uno. Nos hacemos uno con el Todo, llegando al conocimiento de lo Absoluto.
