Ashtanga Yoga es un estilo de mucha fuerza e intensidad creado por el maestro Sri Pattabhi Jois. Es un sistema dinámico de posturas que están entrelazadas entre si por la respiración. El sistema, que tiene varias series de secuencias fijas, está basado en la coordinación de la respiración con el movimiento (vinyasa), para crear un flujo continuo.

Practicado en su correcto orden secuencial, conduce gradualmente al practicante a redescubrir su verdadero potencial humano, con su correcta respiración Ujjayi, posturas (asanas) y focos de la mirada (drishtis).

El cuerpo se fortalece y aumenta su resistencia; la mente se calma al incrementar su capacidad de concentrarse.

Ashtanga une cada una de las asanas a través de vinyasas o medias vinyasas, como también se llaman a los grupos de tres posturas o menos, las mismas siempre, que sirven de eslabones entre asanas o secuencias y mantienen el cuerpo caliente y apto para el flujo dinámico de la práctica. En estas vinyasas suelen juntarse Chaturanga, Urdva Mukha Svanasana y Adho Mukha Svanasana.

Una de las principales funciones del sistema de Ashtanga es generar un intenso calor interno llamado Agni, lo cual produce un efecto purificante físico y energético.

Esta serie de posturas está totalmente predefinida y se sigue siempre de manera meticulosa, lo cual distingue mucho al Ashtanga Yoga de otros estilos, ya que cada postura se considera una preparación para la siguiente. Las asanas se enlazan de manera continua, fluida y consistente, coordinando exactamente cada movimiento con una respiración. El objetivo final es mantener la concentración interna a lo largo de toda la sesión; por eso en Ashtanga se enfatiza mucho en la práctica diaria o regular.

El Ashtanga Yoga se estructura en tres grandes series o secuencias de posturas ordenadas por grado de dificultad: Yoga Chikitsa (primera), Nadi Shodana (segunda) y Sthira Bhaga (tercera). Cada nivel necesita ser desarrollado plenamente antes de proceder al siguiente y normalmente es el profesor quien recomienda al alumno cuándo avanzar en las series.

Este estilo de yoga se suele impartir en dos formatos principales, por un lado como clase guiada. Aquí los estudiantes siguen conjuntamente la clase al ritmo marcado por el profesor en una sesión en la que generalmente solo se aborda la primera serie. La intención de la clase es recordar y aclarar los movimientos correctos, además de profundizar y afrontar las dificultades existentes en la práctica. Es una clase muy recomendable e importante para hacer al menos una vez a la semana, una vez que los alumnos han alcanzado cierto nivel en su práctica diaria.

Por otro lado, existe el denominado estilo Mysore, que hace referencia a la ciudad india de Mysore, donde el gurú Sri K. Pattabhi Jois enseñó Ashtanga Yoga durante más de 60 años. Es un método basado en la auto práctica. Aunque los alumnos están juntos en el mismo espacio, cada uno trabaja la secuencia a su ritmo y en base a su nivel de desarrollo. Mientras, el profesor y los asistentes trabajan individualmente con cada uno para ajustar e ir añadiendo posturas a la serie de cada estudiante.

Cabe destacar que, a nivel teórico, Ashtanga Yoga significa literalmente “yoga de ocho ramas”, como se indica en los Yoga Sutras del sabio Patanjali. Según esta obra, el camino de purificación interior para revelar el Ser se compone de las siguientes ocho prácticas espirituales: Yama (códigos morales), Niyama (auto purificación y estudio), Asana (postura), Pranayama (control de la respiración), Pratyahara (control de los sentidos), Dharana (concentración), Dhyana (meditación), y Samadhi (absorción definitiva en lo absoluto).
